Jonathan Foley, known as JR Art Space, is not your typical middle school art teacher. At Strive Prep Sunnyside, Foley has not only rediscovered his passion for the arts but has also become an inspiration for his students. Blending his teaching role with his personal artistic aspirations, he has created a thriving art community within the school.
Since relocating from New York to Denver two years ago, Foley has embarked on a journey of artistic self-discovery. As a fine artist himself, he brings a unique perspective to the classroom and uses his creative skills to engage his students. Foley’s art class at Strive Prep Sunnyside has gained a reputation as the “B.C.E.” (Best Class Ever), a testament to the dynamic and inspiring environment he cultivates.
What sets Foley apart is his collaboration with renowned artists, such as Shantell Martin, Gregory Siff, Plastic Jesus, and DainNYC. Through these connections, Foley has been able to provide extraordinary learning experiences for his students. These artists have generously donated art supplies, sent personalized video messages, and even interacted directly with Foley’s students, sparking their imagination and fostering a deeper appreciation for the arts.
Foley’s journey has been marked by numerous challenges, but his resilience and determination have propelled him forward. Coming from a loving yet financially strained family, he knows all too well the hardships faced by many artists. During his university years, Foley encountered a pivotal moment that shaped his path. Unable to afford art supplies, he was confronted with the reality of not having staples to assemble his canvas. It was a humbling experience that ignited a fire within him, spurring him to overcome financial constraints and pursue a career in the art world.
Beyond his role as an educator, Foley has established himself as an emerging artist through various platforms, including Etsy, Society6, and Instagram, where he showcases his artwork. His creations have garnered attention, and his work has been exhibited at local trade shows. Notably, one of his pieces found a permanent place at Crisp Barber Shop on Tennyson Street, further solidifying his presence in the local art scene. The success of his artwork not only sustains him financially but also enables him to invest in better art supplies for his students, ensuring they have the resources they need to explore their creativity.
Looking ahead, Foley’s aspirations continue to evolve. Guided by his belief in the power of manifestation, he envisions a future as a fine artist traveling the world. His dream is to live in artistic hubs like Paris, Rome, and Amsterdam, where he can immerse himself in diverse creative communities. For Foley, success is not measured solely by wealth and fame but by the ability to live comfortably, explore the world, and create art along the way.
