Kashmir’s own Owais Yaqoob has made waves in Indian sports history, securing a monumental victory for India against Afghanistan in MFN 14, the apex of professional Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) contests.
Originating from Murran village in Pulwama, Owais Yaqoob showcased exceptional prowess in the ring, displaying strategic brilliance and relentless perseverance against his opponent Mohammad Azam Mokhlis.
Throughout the grueling 15-minute bout, divided into three rounds of five minutes each, Owais’s relentless pressure and calculated strikes ultimately resulted in a unanimous decision in his favor.
“This is the biggest win of my career,” expressed Owais, his jubilation reverberating through the arena.
Owais believes this triumph will elevate his rank among active Asian pro lightweight fighters. The overwhelming support from fans, including fervent Kashmiri supporters and enthusiasts from various Indian states, fueled Owais’s determination throughout the bout.

Owais Yaqoob’s journey to the international MMA arena has been nothing short of inspirational. Making his professional debut at MFN in March 2023, Owais’s stellar performance earned him recognition, leading to his selection for international bouts after an impressive display in the road to MFN contender series in 2022.
Prior to his MFN triumph, Owais showcased his martial arts prowess on the global stage by winning a bronze medal in the World Eskrima Kali Arnis Federation championship in the Philippines in July 2022.
Domestically, Owais has amassed an impressive collection of 11 gold medals and 7 silvers at national level events, along with 17 gold medals in UT level competitions. Beyond his personal achievements, Owais remains committed to nurturing the next generation of MMA talents through his academy, Lion’s Den, where he imparts his expertise to aspiring youngsters.
